Game Recap
On a bright Sunday afternoon at San Gorgonio High School in San Bernardino, the stage is set. The hosts, Titans FC, wear black. The visiting ASC Antelope Valley II sport blue kits.
The referee blows the whistle to start the game. The visitors immediately take control of the ball and build up slowly from the back. The Titans stay compact and don’t press in the midfield. They anticipate the Blues’ play as ASC moves deeper into their half.
In the 7’, ASC Antelope Valley strikes first when the Titans FC goalkeeper slips on a saved shot and an ASC player scores from the dropped ball. Titans FC respond by trying to connect passes, but fail to complete them.
Shortly after, in the 10th minute, the home team scored off an interception. They transition to a 1-2-3 triangle pass pattern. The forward slots it to the right from the box. The game is tied 1-1.
Five minutes later, the Titans take the lead. They score from a cross from the left side to the far right post. The unmarked forward heads left.
The visitors, trailing by a goal, maintain possession and build up play. Even after a turnover, they recycle the ball, spread wide, and shift laterally. They press hard to disrupt the Titan defense and recover the ball in their opponents’ half.
The hosts now apply more pressure, playing directly with risky lobs. They play a counterattacking style to differentiate from the Blues’ possession play. They also win more interceptions. Both teams are physical in the 50/50 balls. Possession can go either way.
Then, in the 35th minute, the Titans get their insurance goal. The GK delivers a long pass to the right winger. He times the bounce and lobs it from outside the box. The ball hits the left corner post and goes in. Titans lead 3-1.
After that point, the match got choppy with fouls. The home fans voiced displeasure with the ref for not showing cards. One Titan fan tested the line judge’s patience and received a firm thumbs-up after every comment. The half-time whistle blew with the hosts leading 3-1.
The second half begins. In the 53rd minute, the Titans get a 4th goal from a free kick on the left side. The service goes to the right post. The player taps the bouncing ball to extend the hosts’ lead to 4-1.
The game’s choppiness increases. A Titan player receives a yellow card for time-wasting, but he and the coach plead that he had a cramp. Within the same minute, ASC scored in the 57th minute. The GK blocks a shot but fails to keep a ground ball. The defender tries to clear, but it goes into the net for an own goal. Titans lead 4-2.
Then, in the 61st minute, the Titans get a 5th goal from a through pass on the left wing. The player crosses it low into the box. His teammate taps it in. Titans lead 5-2.
The scoring continues as now the Blues get their 3rd in the 66’. A solo line drive shot from the 24-yard line goes to the left side of the net. Titans lead 5-3.
From that point on, the game opens up with back-and-forth waves of attack from both sides. The blue team has more waves from possession. Titans shut them down and counterattack.
Frustration grows towards the referee. The Titan coach argues with the line judge over a missed yellow card, claiming an ASC player elbowed his player. Titan players and fans are vocal about the call, agitated by the referee’s lack of accountability.
Tensions escalate in the 84th as ASC earns a penalty in the box, injecting new drama into the match.
The ASC Antelope Valley player converts, and now the visitors are down 5-4 with six minutes left in the game, with their comeback gaining momentum. Titans defended and counterattacked, but ASC pressed for a result.
Then, in a dramatic moment in the 89’, ASC gets fouled around the 38-yard line. The player quickly sends a high lob to the box, which is deflected right by a Titan defender to a lone ASC player. Timing the air ball, he low-shoots it with his left into the right side of the net for the 5th goal. The players don’t celebrate; focused on winning, they rush to restart the ball.
To conclude the dramatic finish, the final play of the match sees an ASC player get a red card for talking back to the referee before a Titan free kick.
