Pre-Game

This matchup is the first encounter between both sides in competitive play. The hosts, Fontana Legacy, were on an L-L-T form and were 8th in the spring standings going into match week 4. Meanwhile, visitors Zapa FC were on a W-L-T form and placed 4th in the standings. They are also a new team coming into the SoCal Premier League.

Game Recap

On a sunny Sunday in the Ralph Lewis Sports Complex in Fontana, the hosts Fontana Legacy in blue take on Zapa FC from OC in black.

At the start of the game, Zapa held the ball more while Fontana defended. The boys in blue were slow to react and in the build-up to making an attack. The visitors immediately pounced on their opponents’ passive intensity with a goal in the 9′ from a turnover in Fontana’s defensive half. The player sprints inward towards the box and passes it to his teammate in the heart of the box for him to slot it home.

Following the goal, the visitors sent most of their team forward on the blue’s half with counterattacking plays and utilizing their wingers. They would use pass-and-move plays and individual efforts to beat the Fontana defense. They made it look easy for most of the first half and held most of the possession.

The hosts struggled with mistakes and interceptions that prevented the team from getting past their halves. Defensively, they applied little pressure on Zapa’s midfield. When they turned over the black team’s ball just outside the box, the transition to attack saw the players fight off pressure with no support and lose possession.

The half would end 1-0 for Zapa as they looked to be the favorites.

The second half kicks off, and Zapa continues to dominate possession and get more risky with shooting the ball from outside the box.

Fontana Legacy still played defensively, keeping the line and using offside traps to prevent the boys in black from executing dump-and-chase plays. The ideas started to click for the hosts with pass-and-move plays, but the execution was not there.

Then, in the 66′, Zapa scored from a slicing cross in the box. The player slotted it to the goalkeeper’s left. The goalkeeper’s effort to pounce on the ball was short, and now the hosts are down 2-0.

Shortly after, in the 68′, Zapa wins a corner on the right. The player whips in the cross to the heart of the box, jumps higher than the marking defender, and lands on the left side. With around 20 minutes left, Zapa makes it 3-0.

Zapa eventually let go of the gas pedal, and Fontana got plays going forward despite their appearance of exhaustion. They had a few chances on the break, but the finishing wasn’t there. The referee blows the final whistle to end the game, and the boys in black take the three points with three goals against Fontana Legacy.
