2022 IE College Preseason Survey

While the college season started for some in late august, the preseason survey I made only received a small number of responses from the coaches sharing their thoughts for the 2022 season. I sent the 4-question google form to all collegiate social media pages, including 2 and 4-year programs, but three coaches had the time to share what they can expect this season.

La Sierra University- Men

Last season the school from southern Riverside finished their season with a 9-7 overall record (6-2 in conference), placing 2nd in the Cal-Pac south division. In the Cal-Pac championship tournament, they sadly fell to Westcliff university 4-2, which ended their postseason run. The golden eagles this season will field many local players from the Riverside and IE areas. Most of the roster are incoming freshmen students (10 out of 27). The two men leading the LSU Men’s side are head coach David Trevino (2nd year) and relative (I’m assuming brother) assistant coach Carlos Trevino (2nd year), along with assistant coaches Bobby Gutirrez and Ivan Rodriguez. Carlos filled out the survey, and here is his response.

What are your goals for the season?

Goals for Men’s Soccer this season would be to make the final of the Cal PAC conference tournament as well as move on to the next round of the national/regional competition. We’re young but this group is ambitious and hungry.

What are some improvements that you want to implement from last season?

Improvements we’d want to implement from last season would be our attention to detail on the field & off of it. We’d like to defend better as a team as well as preserve in the classroom and in our daily lives whether that’s work, personal relationships etc. Setting a standard for what is expected as a student athlete so that we keep each other accountable.

What are some positives from last season that you want to continue?

Positives from last season that we want to continue would be our attacking presence, our competitiveness, our drive, our hunger, our loyalty to each other, our togetherness & pride in our institution and program as a whole.

Who is one team that you’ll pay extra attention to?

Teams we’ll pay extra attention to include UC Merced, Westcliff, Embry Riddle, etc.

La Sierra University- Women

Last season the ladies of LSU ended the regular season with an overall record of 5-5-3 (2-2-2 in conference), placing 3rd in the Cal Pac south division, not making the postseason. The eagles have a mixed-age group of players, with Juniors making up the slight majority of the squad. Like the men, most players come from either the IE or southern California. The coaching staff of the women’s side is the same coach as the men’s side; head coach David Trevino (7th year), assistant coach Carlos Trevino (7th year), and newcomer assistant coach DJ Bonaken. Again, Carlos filled out the survey, and this is his response.

What are your goals for the season?

On the womens side we’re currently rebuilding our roster. We graduated a big class of seniors that played major roles in our team. With that said, making the CalPac conference tournament would be a good goal to reach this upcoming season.

What are some improvements that you want to implement from last season?

Improvements we want to implement from last season would be to be more creative/cohesive in the final third & more clinical in front of goal.

What are some positives from last season that you want to continue?

Positives from last year that we would like to continue is our defensive structure, togetherness, our aggressiveness & mental toughness.

Who is one team that you’ll pay extra attention to?

Teams like UC Merced, Embry Riddle, USK etc. are teams you always have to pay attention to.

UCR-Men

The Highlanders finished their 2021 season with an overall record of 9-7-3 (3-4-2 in conference), placing 6th in the big west and qualifying for the Big West postseason. They blanked Cal Poly 1-0 on the road in their first postseason matchup. In their second match, they lost to UC Irvine on penalties. This season’s squad has a slight majority of freshmen and a mix of the rest of the age groups, as well as a majority of the players being California natives. About a handful of those Cali natives are from the IE. Head coach Tim Capello, approaching his 10-year tenure as head coach of the boys in blue, reflects on what he expects for the 2022 season.

What are your goals for the season?

Our goals are always to compete for championships and represent our tremendous university community on and off the field.

What are some improvements that you want to implement from last season?

The focus for our improvements aren’t from last season. This is a new year and a new team, which provides new opportunities for growth. We want to become the best version of ourselves as possible.

What are some positives from last season that you want to continue?

Similar to the previous answer, this is a new process. However, if we are to highlight a positive we want to continue and enhance, it would be our campus and community support. We love playing at home in front of our fans and hope they enjoy coming out with energy and passion again this fall season!

Who is one team that you’ll pay extra attention to?

The opponent that is next on our schedule.
